Kouzzina by Cat Cora at Walt Disney World's BoardWalk

As a fan of Spoodles I had mixed feelings about checking out Kouzzina which took its place in 2009.  I hated losing Spoodles, but you can’t stop change – especially at Walt Disney World.  So recently I and my family finally made our way over to the Boardwalk to check out Cat Cora’s Mediterranean-style cuisine.

Even though it was the week between Christmas and New Years, things seemed to be running smoothly.  We had an ADR for dinner and were seated in a reasonable amount of time.  We were planning a light meal as we had eaten a late lunch, so we decided to share a couple of appetizers between three of us and get kids meals for two of the kids.  A couple of the kids meals are pretty familiar – cheese pizza and meaty macaroni.  There is Greek Lasagna as well as a chicken skewer with tzatziki and gilled pita bread for the more adventurous tykes.  They include a drink and two sides or an appetizer and dessert all for $8.99.

Upon being seated, a bread and olive oil tasting is served.  Our server gave us some information about the oils which was interesting and left us to debate which was the favorite at our table.

I couldn’t help but think back to our favorite sharable Spoodles appetizer – the Mediterranean dips – delicious.  So we decided to have the Kouzzina Sampler – your choice of two skewers with marinated olives, spiced chickpeas, dolmades, tzatziki, hummus, and grilled pita which is meant to serve two.  We also ordered the Spanakopita, a traditional phyllo pie of spinach, feta, leeks, and dill served on a bit of a chunky tomato sauce.  I’ve never had it with the tomato sauce before, but it was a nice compliment.

The Kouzzina Sampler was a nice size to share with one or even two people as a starter.  The two skewers are your choice of lamb meatballs, shrimp, or chicken.  We decided on shrimp and the lamb meatballs.  The meatballs were somewhat spicy and quite good.  The shrimp were grilled and nothing particularly special.  I would try the chicken next time instead.  I asked our server if the meatballs are the same recipe as the lamb burger found on the Kouzzina Trio entree, and it is.  I had read reviews of it being a very hot, spicy burger.  Perhaps they have turned the heat down somewhat, because we didn’t find it to be overly hot.  The tzatziki was delicious, but the hummus was rather bland and more of a pasty texture than smooth and creamy.  I’ve never before been a fan of dolmades but these were an exception.  They are grape leaves stuffed with herbed goat cheese which are then grilled.  There were three small ones on the sampler, and they left me wanting more.

We skipped dessert this time, as it was truly just a light meal for us, but we are all looking forward to a return trip to explore more of the menu in the future.  The service was excellent and the food left us satisfied and looking forward to return visits.  I still miss Spoodles, but Kouzzina is a good replacement and serves great Mediterranean food at Walt Disney World.
