The Magic, The Memories and You – Stunning nighttime spectacular at Disney’s Magic Kingdom

January 29, 2012 by The Disneyhead

It’s time to draw.  Get out your pen and paper.  Or how about a box of chalk and a convenient sidewalk.  Or maybe your preference is sharpies on the bathroom wall – just kidding!

What if you had a chance to draw with lights, video, photos, and digital graphics on Cinderella Castle?  “No way” you say?  Well starting in 2011 Imagineers started doing just that.  Using high-power projection systems and digital mapping techniques the surface of Cinderella Castle in Walt Disney World is transformed through animation, photography, digital graphics, and Disney technical ingenuity.

Disney’s recent “Let the Memories Begin” campaign was the starting point for this new nighttime spectacular which runs as a prelude to the Wishes fireworks show.  Using guests’ photographs and videos as a starting point Imagineers have created an incredible show of animation and artistry.  Stunning visuals transform the castle into everything from a chalk “sketch” version of itself to a rocket ship blasting off.

This show is simply amazing to watch.  We were able to watch the show from the castle side of the hub and it brought chills, lumps in the throat, and dewey eyes to my wife and me.  Disney really has perfected its fireworks shows, but this visual addition has really taken their artistry to a whole new level.

This show debuted in Disneyland, and it was recently announced that new segments are being added to that show.  One new segment being added includes romantic scenes of our favorite princesses and their princes just in time for Valentine’s Day.  For summer, the it’s a small world attraction’s facade gets into the act with a sand castle beach scene featuring Goofy.
